The Orbiters
NASA's fleet of shuttles represents the world's first
reusable space delivery system. Able to carry payloads of over 50,000
pounds into orbits as high as 400 miles, they are the workhorses of the
manned space program. Equipment on the Orbiter mid-deck and SpaceHab
modules also allow the Shuttle to double as an orbiting science laboratory.
Experiments in medicine, microgravity, metallurgy, crystal growth, cancer
research and earth sciences are a few of the activities aboard a typical
flight in addition to the construction of the International Space Station.
